Director // Tony Walton
Tony Walton is an Oscar, Tony, and Emmy Award winning director and designer. He has been honored with 16 Tony Award nominations for his Broadway sets and/or costumes; Pippin, House of Blue Leaves, and Guys and Dolls all won him Tonys. Among his twenty films, Mary Poppins, The Boy Friend, The Wiz and Murder on the Orient Express earned him 5 Academy Award nominations; All That Jazz won him an Oscar and Death of a Salesman an Emmy. His other films include Fahrenheit 451, All That Jazz, Death of a Salesman, The Glass Menagerie, Regarding Henry, and Deathtrap. His designs for opera and ballet have been seen in London, throughout Europe, and the United States. For the last fifteen years Tony has been the director—and frequently the designer—for acclaimed productions of many plays by Shaw, Wilde, and Coward (along with new work and new musicals by both Irish and American authors) at the Irish Repertory Theatre, The Irish Arts Center, San Diego’s Old Globe, the York Theatre, and Sag Harbor’s Bay Street Theatre, among others. Among his recent directorial achievements was the celebrated production of Equus for East Hampton’s John Drew Theatre at Guild Hall, starring Alec Baldwin.
Tony’s Broadway productions include revivals of Our Town, I'm Not Rappaport, The Man Who Came to Dinner, Uncle Vanya, Annie Get Your Gun, 1776, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, Guys and Dolls, She Loves Me, and Anything Goes, Bob Fosse's original productions of Chicago and Pippin; Pinter's Moonlight and Ashes to Ashes; Grand Hotel, The Real Thing, The Will Rogers Follies, Well, and The House of Blue Leaves, Madison Square Garden's A Christmas Carol and Julie Andrews' triumphant revival of The Boy Friend. For the Irish Repertory Theatre, Tony has directed and designed The Importance of Being Earnest, Major Barbara and the U.S. premiere of Noël Coward's After The Ball. He also directed and designed the smash hit revival of Where's Charlie? for the Goodspeed Opera House, and other distinguished regional theatres. In 1991 Tony was elected to the Theatre Hall of Fame.
