Sarafina! is a South African musical conceived and originally directed by Mbongeni Ngema, who also wrote the book, music, and lyrics. The musical depicts students involved in the Soweto Riots, in opposition to apartheid. Sarafina! premiered on Broadway on 28 January 1988, at the Cort Theatre. The production received Tony Award nominations for Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Choreography, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Featured Actress in a Musical.
Set against a school uprising similar to the Soweto Riots, the story focusses on several young characters including the schoolgirl activist Sarafina. Things get out of control when policemen shoot several pupils at the school. Nevertheless, the musical ends with cheerfully with a farewell show of pupils leaving the school.
